After losing her son Xander Monroe she determined that her pain must be purposeful. By wrapping herself in community services she became aware that all services were not targeted to all demographics of people. Zay's primary focus was to identify the gaps in services for African American women in maternal health. She quickly realized that there were limited resources for mothers that has lost children. The area of infant mortality raised a concern as the black community's presence is disproportionate to any other race. It is her desire to create a climate within the black community to assist with openly grieving the loss of their children, to close the access to care gap within the community and to incite policy change that affects infant mortality. Her vision is that her work with bereaved families will help to create a purpose for their pain, meaning for their journey and healing after the death of their baby.
Zay has actively began her journey filling a gap in black infant mortality by creating the first black infant mortality anthology called, "The Mourning After".
